Background
David lives with his family, and his mother describes him as a child who lights up the family. He is ever happy and always in a jovial mood. He would like to be a teacher when he grows up. When he is out with his friends, he likes to talk about football and play football. He was brought to the hospital with diarrhoea, abdominal pain and vomiting.
Medical history
David presented to the hospital with cramping abdominal pain and diarrhoea. He was diagnosed with Amoebiasis and treated with Metronidazole and IV fluids.
Prognosis
Untreated amoebiasis can result in the parasite spreading from the intestines to other parts of the body, potentially affecting the liver, lungs, or brain. The most common extraintestinal complication is the formation of an amoebic liver abscess. This can lead to severe pain in the upper right side of the abdomen, fever, and sometimes jaundice. In rare cases, amoebiasis can cause the intestinal wall to perforate (develop a hole), leading to peritonitis, a life-threatening condition involving infection of the abdominal cavity. Treatment for amoebiasis typically involves medications, such as metronidazole or tinidazole, to kill the parasite.
