When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About severe malaria, whitlow, anaemia and enteric fever
Maryam was diagnosed with severe malaria, anaemia, enteric fever and whitlow, all of which affected her health at the same time and made her condition serious. The severe malaria caused persistent high fever, severe headache and extreme weakness. It drained her strength and made her unable to eat or play as usual. As a result of the malaria and ongoing infections, she developed anaemia, which reduced her blood level and made her look pale, tired and easily exhausted. She was also suffering from enteric fever, a bacterial infection that caused continuous fever, abdominal pain and loose stool. This further weakened her body and affected her appetite and digestion. In addition, she had whitlow, an infection of the finger, which caused swelling, pain and pus formation, making it difficult for her to use her hand comfortably.

Background
Maryam Bukar is a 9-year-old girl, the third of six children, who attends Islamiyya classes and dreams of becoming a teacher. She is gentle, obedient, and loved deeply by her family. She developed persistent high fever, severe headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, weakness, poor appetite, and pallor. As her condition worsened and she became too weak to play or sit properly, her parents rushed her to Nakowa Hospital, where she was admitted for treatment under the Helpster Charity Foundation care program.
Medical history
Nine year old Maryam was admitted on 19th January with severe malaria, anaemia, enteric fever, and whitlow. She was treated with intravenous artesunate for severe malaria, ceftriaxone to treat enteric fever and the finger infection, paracetamol for fever and pain, blood-building supplements (iron and folic acid) for anaemia, and her whitlow was cleaned and dressed regularly. Her condition improved steadily, and she was discharged on 21st January in stable condition. Maryam's family sincerely thanks Helpster Charity for sponsoring her treatment and giving her the chance to recover and return to a healthy childhood.
Prognosis
Maryam’s prognosis is fair to good, provided she receives prompt and complete medical treatment. With proper administration of antimalarial drugs, antibiotics for enteric fever, treatment for anaemia, and adequate care for the whitlow infection, her condition is expected to improve gradually. Close monitoring, good nutrition, hydration and follow-up care will also support her recovery. However, without proper treatment or if medications are not completed, there is risk of complications, especially due to severe malaria and anaemia. With continued hospital care and compliance with medical advice, she is expected to make a full recovery.
