About upper respiratory track infection, malaria and enteric fever
Abdulhamid Adam, though only a month old, was showing multiple concerning symptoms. He had a persistent high fever, shivering chills, and general body weakness, leaving him unusually lethargic for his age. He also suffered from body aches and discomfort, making it difficult for him to rest or sleep peacefully. His feeding became irregular, with a noticeable loss of appetite, which risked dehydration and slowed his growth. In addition, he developed a runny nose, frequent coughing, and difficulty breathing comfortably, causing him to be restless and irritable. These overlapping symptoms affected his overall strength, making him fragile and vulnerable. The combination of fever, weakness, poor feeding, and respiratory distress significantly impaired his ability to thrive, leaving him in a weakened and precarious state that necessitated urgent hospital admission for close monitoring.

Background
Abdulhamid Adam is a one-month-old baby and the fifth child in his family. He lives with his parents in a modest one-bedroom apartment on Lagos Street in Maiduguri. His mother is a housewife who cares for the children, while his father works as a fisherman. Despite limited resources, his birth brought joy and hope to the family. His illness began when he became unusually weak, had difficulty feeding, cried frequently due to body discomfort, and developed fever, runny nose, and persistent cough. As his condition worsened, his family took him to Nakowa Hospital, where he was admitted for care.
Medical history
Abdulhamid Adam, one month old baby was admitted on 19th January 2026 with a high fever, shivering, body weakness, poor feeding, and signs of severe discomfort. He received prompt medical care, including intravenous artesunate for severe malaria, paracetamol to reduce his fever, intravenous fluids to prevent dehydration, and close monitoring to support his recovery. His condition improved steadily as his fever subsided, his strength returned, and he began feeding normally again. Abdulhamid was discharged in stable condition on 21st January 2026. His family sincerely thanks Helpster Charity for sponsoring his treatment and giving their baby the opportunity to recover and grow in good health.
Prognosis
Given Abdulhamid Adam’s young age and the severity of his symptoms, his condition is delicate but potentially manageable with careful monitoring. His persistent weakness, high fever, poor feeding, body aches, and respiratory distress place him at high risk for dehydration, weight loss, and further complications if not closely observed. Infants are particularly vulnerable because their immune systems are still developing, and even common infections can quickly become serious. If he remains under close supervision and receives appropriate supportive care, there is a reasonable chance that his strength and feeding ability can improve over time. However, recovery may be slow, and his condition must be watched carefully, as any worsening of symptoms could lead to rapid deterioration. With vigilant care, there is hope that he can regain his energy, resume normal feeding, and continue to grow, but the situation remains fragile and requires ongoing attention.
