Kevin is the fifth-born in a family of five children and is a Grade 4 pupil in a rural junior school. He enjoys playing football and dreams of becoming a teacher in the future. Both of his parents are alive, and his mother runs a small-scale business that earns about KES 2,000 per month, which supports the entire household. The family lives in a two-room rental house, shares an unprotected pit latrine, and relies on water from a nearby borehole for both domestic use and drinking. Kevin had been unwell for a few days with a cough and chest pain and had been given some over the counter medication. Kevin later developed fast and laboured breathing, persistent cough, fever, and loss of appetite and pain on swallowing food. Due to financial hardship, his family could not afford medical care or even further basic medication after the ones given previously did not work. Two months earlier, a school security guard had previously benefited from Helpster Charity and this security guard encouraged the family to seek help at Mechimeru Health Centre. Following this advice, Kevin was taken to the facility, where he received free medical care through Helpster Charity.

Kevin's condition was treated with prompt hospitalization, where he received intravenous antibiotics to fight the infection and fluids to maintain hydration and blood pressure. Doctors closely monitored his lung function and vital signs, adjusting treatment as needed, and provided respiratory therapy to help clear his airways. Over time, his fever subsided and breathing improved. With continued recovery and follow-up care, Kevin regained strength and lung function, leading to a positive overall outcome.

Kevin was diagnosed with severe pneumonia after presenting with fast and laboured breathing, chest indrawing, persistent cough, fever, and difficulty feeding. His condition indicated a serious lung infection requiring urgent medical care, including antibiotics, supportive treatment, and close monitoring to prevent respiratory failure and other complications. With prompt hospital treatment and follow-up care, Kevin’s prognosis is good, and he is expected to recover fully. However, without timely treatment, severe pneumonia can quickly become life-threatening, making continued care and monitoring essential for his full recovery.
