Anna A., 20

Anna is a young mother of three who lives with her husband and children in a one-room mud-walled house. She dropped out of school in Class Two due to financial challenges and has no formal education, leaving her husband—who completed high school—as the sole breadwinner, working as an unskilled labourer at construction sites. Anna began feeling unwell and nauseated and sought medical care, where routine tests confirmed that she was pregnant. She attended four antenatal clinic visits, often walking more than an hour to reach the health facility. One Monday morning, she started experiencing abdominal pain but did not seek medical attention immediately. Two weeks later, when her symptoms became severe, she visited a nearby facility and was referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital for further care. She presented with painful urination, foul-smelling urine, lower abdominal discomfort, fever, and general weakness. Over time, her condition worsened, and she developed severe lower abdominal pain, back pain, fever, vomiting, and spotting—which refers to light vaginal bleeding, and is a danger sign if it occurs during pregnancy. These symptoms suggested uterine irritation and an increased risk to the pregnancy, requiring urgent medical attention.

Anna was brought to the hospital with abdominal pains, she was diagnosed with UTI in pregnancy, she was admitted and administered paracetamol, clotrimazodepsary, nitrofuration ...During the course of treatment she went into labour, and gave birth to a preterm baby. She was later discharged on orals, a visit to the home revealed that she was doing okay and had gone back to her normal life .

The prognosis for a 20-year-old diagnosed with a urinary tract infection (UTI) during pregnancy is generally excellent, provided it is diagnosed early and treated promptly with appropriate antibiotics.
