Severe malaria is a life-threatening, emergency complication of Plasmodium falciparum infection, resulting in organ failure, severe anemia, or metabolic disturbances. Defined by parasitemia plus clinical/laboratory dysfunction, it requires immediate, often intravenous, treatment.

Background
Maryam is a curious, active, and sociable 13-year-old girl who enjoys creative activities and learning, and dreams of achieving her goals and helping others. She presented with a six-day history of high-grade fever, chills, generalized weakness, vomiting, poor appetite, and headache, which left her lethargic, irritable, and less active than usual. Examination revealed fever, mild pallor, and mild abdominal tenderness. Diagnostic tests confirmed severe malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum with high parasitemia. She is currently moderately ill but receiving appropriate medical care and close monitoring.
Medical history
Maryam, a 13-year-old girl, was admitted to the hospital with severe malaria. She received prompt treatment with antimalarial medications, intravenous fluids, fever-reducing medications, and other supportive care while being closely monitored by the medical team. She responded well to treatment, with gradual resolution of her fever, improved appetite, increased energy, and steady recovery. After completing her treatment, Maryam was discharged home in stable condition. She is expected to make a full recovery, regain her strength, and return to her normal daily activities without long-term complications. Prognosis
Maryan is having severe malaria. which is a critical emergency requiring immediate intravenous treatment to prevent rapid multi-organ failure and death. The primary complications include cerebral malaria (coma/seizures), severe anaemia, and acute kidney injury, which carry a high mortality rate if not addressed within hours [1, 2, 4]. While the prognosis is excellent with prompt specialized care, survivors of severe episodes may face long-term neurological deficits or cognitive impairment With prompt treatment, Maryam is likely to recover fully from severe malaria. If left untreated, the illness could become life-threatening, leading to serious complications such as severe anemia, organ failure, or even death.
