Leonard O., 1

Leonard is the last-born child in his family and lives with his mother and sister in a one-room semi-permanent house. His mother previously worked in the local gold mines but has been unable to continue working as she now stays home to care for Leonard. She describes him as a playful and happy child when well. His mother reported that Leonard had been fine until she noticed that his body felt very hot. She borrowed money from a neighbour and bought over-the-counter medication, hoping he would improve. Instead, his condition worsened, and he began vomiting and experiencing convulsions. Confused and frightened, she returned to the chemist where she had purchased the medicine to ask for further help. The chemist informed her that convulsions are a danger sign in children and urgently advised her to take Leonard to Siaya County Referral Hospital, explaining that a charity organization at the hospital supports underprivileged sick children. She immediately rushed him to the hospital for care.

Leonard was brought to the hospital with complaints of coughing, headache and hotness of the body. He was diagnosed with severe malaria and febrile convulsions which warranted admission to the ward. While at the ward he was administered paracetamol, IV Artesunate, ceftriaxone among other medications. He responded well to treatment and was eventually discharged on orals. A visit to their home revealed Leonard was well and had gone back to his normal life.

When Leonard arrived, he was assessed as a medical emergency after developing fever, vomiting, and convulsions—danger signs that indicate a severe underlying illness in young children. He required urgent stabilization, close monitoring, and prompt treatment to control the seizures, treat the infection, and prevent further complications such as brain injury or worsening illness.
