Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About diagnostics

Severe birth asphyxia, or perinatal asphyxia, occurs when a newborn is deprived of oxygen just before, during, or after delivery, leading to critical multi-organ damage, particularly hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in the brain.

Background

Baby Gladys is the first and only child of her mother and lives with her mother, paternal grandmother, and two cousins in a two-room mud-walled house. Her mother recently completed high school and currently has no income, so the family depends on the grandmother, who is a peasant farmer, for support. During pregnancy, the mother attended six antenatal clinic visits, often walking for three hours to reach the facility. One Wednesday she began experiencing abdominal pain, which she initially ignored. The following day, the pain worsened, prompting her to seek care at a nearby facility, where she delivered normally. Shortly after birth, the baby developed breathing difficulties, required resuscitation, and was referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital for further management. While at the hospital, the mother became worried because her baby was receiving treatment but she had no money to pay for the care. Fellow patients informed her about Helpster Charity, encouraging her to seek assistance from the program.

Medical history

Baby Gladys was born with difficulty in breathing, after resuscitation she was admitted to the NBU. She was administered oxygen via nasal prongs, IV fluid dextrosea, IV xpen among drugs. She responded well to treatment and was discharged on orals with clinic appointments booked in the occupational therapy clinic

Prognosis

Baby Gladys was assessed and found to have birth asphyxia, meaning he experienced difficulty getting enough oxygen around the time of birth. He required urgent newborn care, close monitoring, and supportive treatment to stabilize his breathing and protect his developing organs, especially the brain. With continued medical care, monitoring, and follow-up, Baby Gladys is expected to continue improving and grow well.
