Michelle J., 12

Michelle is a 12 year old female child currently living with her family, father is a security guard and the mother is house wife. They are are living in a 2 rooms apartment having a pit toilet, they make use of water from the well in their community. No access to electricity. The family are finding it difficult to feed squarely in the family. Michelle wishes to be a medical doctor when she grows up. Michelle a 12yr old student presented with the complaints of cough, difficulty in breathing, abdominal pains and headache. Cough is productive of mucoid sputum, non-bloody. There is associated fever high grade, no neck pains. Also, notice to have some difficulty in breathing which occurs, non-posture dependent. On examination, young child, febrile (38.1o C), not pale, anicteric, and ill looking. Chest Examination shows RR; 32cpm, SPo2 90%, transmittals sound in the anterior lung 30ues. Abdominal; Full, MWR, no tenderness, Lo So Ko, No mass palpable. Diagnosis of Acute Pneumonia and Malaria was made and she needs medical treatment. The family heard about Helpster charity from a beneficiary, they cannot afford the bills and they contacted a volunteer for assistance.

On examination, young child, febrile (38.1o C), not pale, unicteric, ill looking. She was diagnosed with Acute Pneumonia and Malaria Patient was on admission where treatment commenced with injection antimalarials, injection antibiotics, antipyretics, cough syrup and other supportive care until stable. Cough gradually stopped, breathing continued at normal rate, no more abdominal pain. Patient was discharged to be returned for follow up after one week.

For Michelle a 12-year-old female with acute pneumonia, prognosis is generally good if treated early with appropriate antibiotics and supportive care. She will recover completely within one to two weeks. Severe cases may lead to complications like pleural effusion or respiratory distress if treatment is delayed. For malaria, prognosis is also favorable with prompt diagnosis and proper antimalarial therapy. Early treatment prevents complications such as severe anemia or cerebral malaria. Overall outcome is excellent with timely medical care and monitoring.
