Adeno-tonsillar hypertrophy refers to the enlargement or swelling of both the adenoids and tonsils. The adenoids are a collection of lymphoid tissue located at the back of the nasal passage, while the tonsils are clusters of lymphoid tissue in the throat. When both the adenoids and tonsils become enlarged, it can result in various health issues, such as difficulty breathing, snoring, sleep apnea, recurrent infections, and other related symptoms.

Background
Khadija is a 7-year-old child who loves to play, and when she grows up, she wants to be a nurse. Recently, she got sick with an infection that caused her adenoids and tonsils to swell. This makes it hard for Khadija to swallow because it hurts. The problem also keeps her from sleeping well at night.
Medical history
Khadija had severe pain and difficulty swallowing due to issues in her throat. Doctors diagnosed her with tonsillitis, requiring a surgical procedure called a tonsillectomy. The surgery was performed under general anesthesia by an ENT surgeon and other medical personnel, and she was discharged after three days without any complications. Dr. Abubakar, the lead surgeon, certified her fit one week after her discharge. He remarked that many families would benefit from such gestures, as many patients in this part of the world cannot afford this type of surgery. Upon visiting the family, Khadija was seen playing and full of life. Compared to her initial hospital visit, she looked like a completely new person after the surgery.
Prognosis
Enlarged tonsils can trap bacteria and viruses, leading to recurrent throat and ear infections. These infections can cause discomfort, pain, and may require repeated courses of antibiotics. An adenotonsillectomy is a medical procedure in which both the adenoids and tonsils are surgically removed. The adenoids are small glands located at the back of the throat, while the tonsils are situated on either side of the throat.
