Background
Abubakar is a 7-year-old boy who lives with his parents in a modest mud-brick home on the edge of the Bade community. His parents are hardworking but face ongoing financial challenges, making it difficult to afford basic needs. He was admitted to Ayaji Hospital on February 7, 2026, after one week of illness. His symptoms included high-grade fever with chills and rigors, headache, dizziness, and occasional vomiting. He had received antimalarials and antibiotics before presentation, but his symptoms persisted. On examination, he was febrile with a temperature of 39.4°C and pale, with a packed cell volume of 24%, indicating anemia. Laboratory tests confirmed significant malaria parasites infection (MP ++). He was diagnosed with Severe malaria complicated by anemia.
Medical history
Treatment and Recovery Abubakar, a 7-year-old boy, was admitted with a diagnosis of severe malaria. He presented with high fever, weakness, poor appetite, and general body malaise. Following clinical assessment and laboratory confirmation, he was commenced on appropriate treatment. He received intravenous Artesunate as antimalarial therapy, intravenous fluids for rehydration, and Paracetamol for fever control. He was also given hematinic supplements, including Iron and Folic Acid, to support his recovery and improve his overall health status. During his hospital stay, Abubakar was closely monitored and responded well to treatment. His fever gradually subsided, his appetite improved, and he regained his strength. His condition remained stable throughout admission, and no complications were observed. Following a satisfactory recovery, Abubakar was discharged home in good health with medications and follow-up instructions. He returned home active, playful, and feeling much better.
Prognosis
Abubakar is having Severe malaria complicated by anemia, which is a serious condition in which high levels of malaria parasites lead to destruction of red blood cells. It can progress rapidly if not promptly treated. With appropriate treatment, including antimalarial therapy, possible blood transfusion, and supportive care, recovery is expected. Prognosis is generally good with timely intervention, but delayed or inadequate treatment may result in severe anemia, organ complications, or life-threatening outcomes.
