An inguinal hernia is a condition in which a portion of the intestine or abdominal tissue protrudes through a weakened or torn area in the lower abdominal wall, typically in the groin area. A person with an inguinal hernia typically experiences a noticeable bulge or lump in the groin area. This bulge can be painful or uncomfortable, especially when lifting, coughing, or straining. Some individuals might also feel aching or burning sensations around the hernia. In certain cases, the hernia can lead to symptoms like groin pain, a feeling of heaviness in the lower abdomen, and discomfort.

Background
Ahmad is an 8year old boy, who is playful and loves riding bicycle. He wants to be an engineer when he grows up. He developed a left inguinoscrotal swelling about 5 years ago, currently experiencing mild pains and discomfort at the inguinal region due to a partial obstruction.
Medical history
Eight-year-old Ahmed, living in abject poverty exacerbated by the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency in their slum for the past decade, presented with complaints of left scrotal swelling, heaviness, and groin pain. He was diagnosed with a left inguinoscrotal hernia and admitted for surgery on December 9, 2023. Following a successful procedure, he was discharged on December 12, 2023. The boy's condition has significantly improved, with no swelling or discomfort. His parents are overjoyed as their child can now attend school and reconnect with his peers.
Prognosis
If left untreated, inguinal hernias can lead to complications such as bowel obstruction, strangulation (where blood supply to the herniated tissue is cut off), and significant pain or discomfort. Surgery is the most common treatment for inguinal hernias to repair the weakened area and prevent these potential complications.
