Joan is a seven-year-old girl and the youngest of two children. She lives with her older brother and their mentally challenged single mother in a market center within the locality. Since early childhood, Joan has not had the opportunity to attend school, as she spends most of her time accompanying her mother on the streets, begging for food and helping care for her brother. Occasionally, well-wishers support her brother’s schooling, but the family’s circumstances remain extremely difficult. They live in a dilapidated single room that was generously offered to them by a kind woman. At times, they go without food and lack many basic necessities. Despite these hardships, Joan finds joy in dancing with her brother, an activity that brings brief happiness to their mother. Joan was rescued and brought to the health facility by a compassionate stranger who found the family sleeping along the Awasi–Katito road. The well-wisher had learned about Helpster Charity through church announcements and sought assistance on their behalf. Upon further inquiry, the mother disclosed that Joan had been experiencing a persistent, non-productive cough for three days, accompanied by a runny nose, high fever, and chills. The symptoms had progressively worsened, with no identifiable aggravating or relieving factors. Joan appeared weak and unwell, with marked fatigue and reduced activity. She also complained of painful, itchy eyes with whitish discharge, suggesting a concurrent eye infection. Her overall condition appeared serious, warranting urgent medical attention.

The child spent days in the ward being managed on intravenous antibiotics and upon feeling well, she was discharged.

Joan appeared generally weak and unwell on examination, which may also be associated with her difficult living conditions, poor nutrition, and limited access to healthcare. Considering her social circumstances and the progression of symptoms, it was important that she received immediate medical assessment and treatment to prevent further complications. Joan was started on appropriate medical management, including treatment for the respiratory infection and eye infection, along with supportive care such as fever control, hydration, and nutritional support. Her caregivers were also advised on hygiene measures, medication adherence, and the importance of follow-up visits. With proper treatment, adequate nutrition, and a safe living environment, Joan is expected to recover well from the current illness.
