About obstructed labour
Obstructed Labour (also known as neglected obstructed labour) is a life-threatening obstetric emergency defined as the failure of the fetal presenting part to descend through the birth canal despite adequate uterine contractions, due to an anatomical barrier that cannot be overcome by the power of the contractions alone. It is a significant cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, particularly in low-resource settings.

Background
Elizabeth Alpha is a 30-year-old mother of three who is known to be calm and caring. She once dreamed of becoming a lawyer, but financial constraints prevented her from pursuing her education. She now finds joy in caring for her children, spending time with family, and supporting her household despite recent emotional stress following the tragic loss of her brother. She was admitted in labour on 12th February 2026 and experienced prolonged labour lasting over 14 hours, which led to exhaustion, maternal and fetal distress, and obstructed labour. She underwent a successful cesarean section. Both mother and baby are currently stable, with no complications, and are recovering well.
Medical history
Obstructed Labour Patient underwent an emergency Lower Segment Cesarean Section under general anesthesia. Alive neonate was delivered successfully and placenta was delivered completely. Due to amount of blood loss, resulting to anemia, patient received compatible screened blood transfusion (450 units) transfusion was successful without any adverse reaction. Mother and child are all doing well.
Prognosis
Obstructed labour is a serious obstetric emergency that can result in severe complications such as infection, uterine rupture, or harm to the baby, making timely surgical intervention essential. With successful cesarean section and appropriate post-operative care, recovery is typically favorable for both mother and child. Prognosis is good as both are currently stable, though continued monitoring is important to ensure full recovery and prevent post-surgical complications.
