Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?
When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

Background
Berita is a 17-year-old girl living with her family in a rural community. She is currently in Grade 10 at a local secondary school, where she remains committed to her studies despite limited resources. She comes from a modest background and relies entirely on her mother, who is the sole provider for the family. Her mother earns approximately KSh 1,000 per month from selling vegetables at the local market, an income that barely sustains their basic needs. Berita hopes to successfully complete her secondary education and eventually pursue further studies or vocational training so she can improve her family’s economic situation in the future. Her illness began with generalized body weakness and noticeable pallor of the skin and eyes. She also complained of persistent headaches and abdominal pain. Due to financial hardship, her mother was unable to seek medical attention immediately, and over time her condition progressively worsened. When the symptoms became more severe, her mother shared her concerns with a fellow beneficiary of Helpster Charity. She was advised to take Berita to Bulondo Health Centre, where Helpster supports vulnerable families with access to medical care. Upon arrival at the facility, Berita was assessed and enrolled in the support program to facilitate her treatment. At presentation, she reported severe headache, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, joint pains, and profound body weakness. She appeared acutely unwell and required urgent medical evaluation and management.
Medical history
Berita was admitted with severe malaria and pneumonia. She received IV antimalarials, antibiotics, antipyretics, fluids, and oxygen. Her vitals were monitored, and she was given nutritional support. Within days, her fever dropped, breathing improved, and symptoms subsided. She recovered well and was discharged with oral medications and follow-up instructions. Her mother was deeply grateful for Helpster’s support, as the family couldn’t afford treatment.
Prognosis
Berita was diagnosed with typhoid fever and severe malaria - a dual infection that can significantly weaken the body, especially in adolescents from nutritionally and economically vulnerable backgrounds. The combination of high fever, severe headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, and joint pains is consistent with both infections. With the timely and appropriate treatment, Berita’s prognosis is good. Most patients recover fully from typhoid fever and malaria when treated early and adequately.
