It presents with involuntary passage of stool or gas through the vagina, recurrent infections, and discomfort, leading to significant social and psychological distress. Management requires preoperative optimization, infection control, and surgical repair to restore normal anatomy and function, with supportive care including hydration, analgesia, and close monitoring to ensure successful healing.

Background
Sa’adatu Umar is an 18-year-old young woman from a low-income family with limited access to healthcare. She is known to be helpful within her community, enjoys reading, and dreams of becoming a midwife so she can support women during childbirth. She presented with a two-month history of involuntary passage of stool and gas through the vagina following a prolonged labour. This was associated with recurrent vaginal infections, discomfort, and significant social distress. On examination, a small tract was identified between the rectum and vagina, confirming a diagnosis of rectovaginal fistula. She is currently planned for surgical repair pending financial support for treatment.
Medical history
MEDICAL REPORT INRESPECT OF SA'ADATU UMAR,FEMALE,18 YEARS OLD SALMA,an 18year-old teenager, presented with involuntary passage of stool and flatus through the vagina for 2 months.This followed a prolonged labor,after which she noticed recurrent vaginal infection, discomfort and social distress.She became very uncomfortable for the past 1 week.After thorough evaluation and investigation, she was diagnosed with RECTOVAGINAL FISTULA. She underwent successful surgery without immediate complications. Due to the nature of her condition, she was admitted for 3 days for close monitoring and post-operative care.She recovered well and was discharged home after 7 days, with a follow-up appointment scheduled for 1 week. Currently, she is doing well, has fully recovered, and has resumed his regular activities. We appreciate the timely intervention by Helpster and the UMD Medical team.
Prognosis
The patient is experiencing complications following childbirth that have significantly affected her physical comfort, hygiene, and social wellbeing. Surgical correction has been advised as the definitive treatment, and she is currently stable while awaiting the procedure. With successful surgical repair and appropriate post-operative care, her symptoms are expected to resolve and normal function restored. Prognosis is generally good, although recovery will depend on timely intervention, proper wound care, and adherence to follow-up recommendations.
