Joylyn is the only child of her mother. She lives with her mother, grandparents, an aunt, and step-uncles in a two-roomed mud-walled house. Her mother did not pursue tertiary education and relies on casual jobs to support her child, while her grandparents are peasant farmers with no stable source of income. According to her mother, Joylyn was well until one Thursday when she developed a high fever and became unusually dull and less playful. Her grandmother was the first to notice the change and alerted the mother. By Friday night, Joylyn became increasingly irritable, crying persistently and unable to sleep. Her mother administered Panadol syrup, which provided only brief relief before the symptoms returned. Over the following days, Joylyn’s condition worsened significantly. She became progressively weak, stopped feeding well, and appeared extremely pale. She was lethargic, with minimal response to her surroundings, and would often lie still with little energy. At times, she seemed too weak to cry, raising serious concern about her condition. With her child’s health deteriorating rapidly and limited financial means, her mother borrowed money to seek medical care at a nearby health centre. Upon assessment, Joylyn was found to be severely anemic and was urgently referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital for further evaluation and management.

Joylyn was brought to the hospital with complaints of hotness of the body, lethargic and pale. She was diagnosed with severe malaria and severe anemia. She was promptly admitted and blood transfusion started via nasal prongs , she was. She was also administered IV Artesunate, ceftriaxone, pcm among other drugs. She responded well to medication and was eventually discharged on orals.

Given her age and clinical condition, the medical team considered this a medical emergency. She required immediate admission for close monitoring and urgent intervention, including blood transfusion to restore her hemoglobin levels, treatment of the underlying cause, management of fever, and supportive care such as fluids and nutritional support. The prognosis is guarded but favorable with prompt and appropriate treatment. Following timely medical intervention, including transfusion and treatment of the underlying cause, Joylyn is expected to gradually regain strength, improve feeding, and return to normal activity levels.
