Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that causes inflammation and fluid accumulation in the air spaces, leading to symptoms such as cough, fever, fast breathing, chest discomfort, and difficulty in breathing. In infants, it can rapidly affect oxygen levels and overall body function if not promptly treated. Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection transmitted through contaminated food or water, presenting with persistent fever, weakness, poor feeding, and abdominal discomfort. When it occurs together with pneumonia, it increases the severity of illness, placing the child at higher risk of dehydration, low oxygen levels, and systemic complications, thus requiring urgent medical care and close monitoring.

Background
Hajara is a 6-month-old infant who was brought for medical care after developing cough, fever, and difficulty breathing over three days. Her symptoms were associated with fast breathing, chest discomfort, and increasing lethargy. On examination and further investigations, she was found to have pneumonia complicated by typhoid fever, with mild hypoxia and lung involvement. She is currently receiving treatment including antibiotics, antipyretics, oxygen therapy, and supportive care. Her condition is being closely monitored, and she is showing gradual improvement while awaiting full recovery before discharge.
Medical history
Hajara was admitted on 21/02/2026 with a severe infection requiring inpatient care. She was treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics, antipyretics, oxygen therapy, intravenous fluids, nutritional support, and close medical monitoring throughout her admission. After three days in the hospital, Hajara was discharged on 24/02/2026 in stable condition. Her fever resolved, her breathing improved significantly, and she regained her strength. Prognosis
Pneumonia complicated by typhoid fever is a serious condition in infants, as lung infection affects breathing and oxygen supply while typhoid fever contributes to persistent fever, weakness, and poor feeding. The combination increases the risk of hypoxia, dehydration, and systemic illness, requiring prompt hospital-based treatment and close monitoring. With appropriate management including antibiotics, oxygen therapy, and supportive care, recovery is expected. Prognosis is generally good with timely intervention, though continued observation is important to ensure full resolution and prevent complications.
