Macrine Atieno O., 1

Macrine is the youngest in a family of four children. Her mother is a homemaker with no source of income, while her father works as a motorcycle rider to support the family. Macrine was born with a congenital condition in which she did not have an anal opening. She was referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where she successfully underwent corrective surgery and has since been on colostomy care. Despite her medical challenges, Macrine is a cheerful child with a bright smile and enjoys making playful sounds as if she is singing. Since the colostomy procedure, she has been under the close care of her mother and had generally remained in good health. However, one evening she developed multiple episodes of diarrhea. Her mother administered oral rehydration solution (ORS), but there was no improvement. By the following day, Macrine developed high fever and began experiencing difficulty in breathing, which raised concern. Alarmed by her worsening condition, her mother rushed her to the health facility for urgent care. The family had learned about Helpster Charity through another caregiver in their community whose child had previously received support at the same facility. Encouraged by this information, they sought help there. At the hospital, Macrine was assessed and diagnosed with sepsis. She was immediately started on appropriate treatment and closely monitored due to the severity of her condition.

Macrine was brought into the facility week sick looking,with history of diarrhoea for 3 days,then she developed difficulty in breathing and hotness of the body.Samples were taken to laboratory for investigation and a diagnosis of septicemia was made.She was commenced on Iv antibiotics,flagyl and antipyretics.Macrine showed very marked improvement upon day 3 post discharge.She is on colostomy since birth.Hygiene issue was adressed since this was a breech. Macrined had fair prognosis and upon discharge she was able to play,smile and eat well.She was discharged on oral medications for continuity of care at home and a follow up date was set for 28/2/2026.

Macrine presented with a history of persistent diarrhea, high fever, and difficulty in breathing—signs suggestive of a severe systemic infection. Given her background of a congenital condition and colostomy care, she is more vulnerable to infections. Clinical evaluation confirmed septicaemia With continued care and monitoring, Macrine has a good chance of full recovery. However, delayed treatment could have led to severe complications such as septic shock or organ damage.
