Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

Background

Sally is the youngest child in her family. She lives with her mother, brother, and stepfather in a two-roomed mud-walled house. Her mother is unemployed and relies on her stepfather, who does casual work, to support the family. When in good health, Sally is an active, playful, and talkative child. According to her mother, Sally began complaining of severe stomach pain and asked to be carried. Shortly afterward, she suddenly developed convulsions, which left her mother extremely alarmed. In an attempt to help, her mother removed her clothes and laid her under a tree. Although the convulsions temporarily subsided, Sally remained weak, drowsy, and unresponsive, raising serious concern about her condition. She appeared very ill, with episodes of altered consciousness and continued discomfort. Her mother quickly dressed her and rushed her to Siaya County Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention. The family had learned about Helpster Charity through a neighbor whose child had previously received support at the same facility. Encouraged by this information, they sought care with the hope that Sally would receive the necessary treatment and support.

Medical history

Sally was brought to the hospital with complaints of abdominal pain, hotness of the body and convulsions. She was diagnosed with severe malaria and febrile convulsions, this prompted admission to the ward. She was administered IV Artesunate, paracetamol, AL among other drugs. She responded well to medication and was eventually discharged on orals..A visit to the home revealed Sally was back in school and active as ever

Prognosis

Sally presented with severe abdominal pain followed by convulsions, altered consciousness, and weakness—features highly suggestive of severe malaria with febrile convulsions. The seizures were likely triggered by the high fever associated with the malaria infection. This condition is considered a medical emergency, particularly in children, as it can progress rapidly and may lead to complications such as cerebral malaria, prolonged seizures, or neurological damage if not promptly treated. The prognosis is good with prompt and appropriate treatment. Since Sally was brought to the hospital quickly and received timely care, she is expected to recover well.
