Gideon N., 7

Gideon Ngeso is a seven-year-old boy and the youngest in a family of five children. He lives with both of his parents in a nearby village and is currently in Grade Three at a local primary school close to their home. Gideon enjoys woodwork and often spends time making simple toys from wood. He also loves playing football and spends much of his free time with his father, whom he admires and hopes to emulate in the future. Gideon’s father is a mason who works within the village and occasionally goes door to door offering repair services. He is the sole provider not only for his immediate family but also for his late sister’s children, who depend on him for support. Gideon’s mother is a housewife who relies largely on her husband, although she occasionally assists in the workshop when he is away. As a result, the household supports many children, placing a significant financial strain on the family. Gideon was brought to the health facility by his mother in a weak and visibly ill condition. He had been well until about a week prior, when he developed a persistent cough—sometimes productive and at other times dry—accompanied by fever, difficulty in breathing, restlessness and headache. The family initially managed his symptoms at home using paracetamol without medical guidance, but his condition continued to worsen. Due to financial challenges, they were unable to seek hospital care until a friend advised them to visit Kafadha and seek support through Helpster Charity. Upon arrival, Gideon was promptly assessed and investigations confirmed a diagnosis of bronchopneumonia. Given the severity of his condition, he was admitted for further management and treatment.

Gideon was admitted on 21/02/2026 with a diagnosis of bronchopneumonia after presenting with symptoms consistent with a chest infection. On admission, he was started on cef and gentamicin injection as part of treatment to control the infection and prevent further progression of the illness. He was closely monitored throughout his hospital stay for improvement in breathing, temperature, feeding, and general condition. He responded well to treatment, with gradual reduction in fever, improvement in activity, and stabilization of his overall condition. Over the course of admission, his symptoms improved steadily without complications. By 24/02/2026, Gideon was clinically stable, feeding well, and breathing comfortably, and he was therefore discharged in good condition. He was sent home on Septrin and paracetamol to continue treatment and supportive care, with an expected good recovery.

In medical opinion, Gideon require hospital admission because bronchopneumonia is a potentially serious lower respiratory tract infection that may worsen rapidly without close observation and appropriate treatment. Admission was necessary to allow for careful monitoring of his breathing pattern, temperature, feeding, hydration status, and overall response to medication. Inpatient care also ensured that he received timely injectable antibiotics, which are often more effective at the initial stage of moderate to severe infection, especially where there is fever, weakness, or risk of respiratory complications. The child also needed monitoring for possible worsening symptoms such as fast breathing, chest in-drawing, persistent fever, or reduced oral intake. With prompt treatment and supportive care, Gideon’s prognosis was good, and he was expected to recover fully without long-term complications. However, without admission and early treatment, the infection could have progressed and caused more serious breathing difficulties or systemic illness.
