Daffin B., 13

Daffin is a 13-year-old girl and the firstborn in a family of three children. She was born and raised in a nearby village by both her parents, who later separated. She is currently a Grade 8 student at a local school, which is some distance from her home, requiring her to walk daily in pursuit of her education. Daffin now lives with her grandmother after her mother left when she was about six years old and has not returned since. She shares the home with her cousins, all under the care of their elderly grandmother, who relies on small-scale farming to provide for the family. Due to limited income, the household often struggles to meet basic needs, including food, education, and other essentials. During school holidays, Daffin supports her grandmother by working on the farm and engaging in small income-generating activities, such as collecting and selling firewood. At times, she uses this income to contribute toward her school fees and personal needs. Despite these challenges, she remains hardworking and determined. She previously dropped out of school due to lack of fees but was able to return after two years. She is passionate about her education and aspires to become a nurse in the future so she can support her family and improve their living conditions. Daffin was brought to the health facility by her grandmother with complaints of generalized chest pain that was non-radiating and stabbing in nature, associated with cold symptoms, difficulty in breathing, headache, and throat pain with difficulty swallowing. On examination, she appeared unwell and fatigued. She was taken for laboratory investigations, after which she was diagnosed with severe pneumonia requiring urgent admission. Upon receiving this information, her grandmother initially declined admission, expressing concern over the inability to afford treatment and hospital bills, and considered leaving to seek over-the-counter care. However, the healthcare team intervened and reassured her that Daffin would receive support for treatment through Helpster Charity, allowing her to proceed with the necessary care.

Daffin was admitted to the ward on 26/02/2026 with severe pneumonia, presenting with high fever, persistent cough, breathing difficulty, and general body weakness. Due to the seriousness of his condition, he required close medical observation and inpatient care. Laboratory investigations included malaria test carried out to assess his overall health status and rule out other possible causes of illness. During her admission, she was managed with xpen and gentamycin to treat the infection, IM dinac for pain relief, as well as Panadol for fever and pain control. Her condition gradually improved as the fever subsided, breathing stabilized, and her strength returned. By 28/02/2026, Daffin had recovered well and was discharged in stable condition with cephalexin prescribed to continue treatment at home and advice to continue Folic acid, alongside follow-up care if symptoms recurred.

Daffin presented with symptoms consistent with severe pneumonia, including high fever, persistent cough, difficulty in breathing, and marked weakness. On clinical evaluation, her condition indicated significant lower respiratory tract infection, placing her at risk of respiratory distress and other complications if not properly managed. In the doctor’s opinion, the severity of her symptoms required immediate ward admission for close monitoring of his respiratory status, temperature, and overall condition. Inpatient management was necessary to administer parenteral antibiotics, supportive medications, and hydration, as well as to ensure rapid medical response should his condition worsen. With appropriate ward-based care and continuous monitoring, the prognosis is good.
