Masud lives with his parents in a small, one-room mud house on the edge of Gashua. Their home is in poor condition, with a leaky roof that struggles to keep out the dust and rain. On a tiny income of only 7,000 Naira, the family barely makes enough to afford food and basic repairs. Masud was presented at Ayaji Medical and Diagnostic Centre with a localized umbilical protrusion that has persisted for three months, experiences sharp, focal pain at the site of the umbilical defect, which he describes as worsening with physical effort or coughing, Masud’s condition has progressed to a state of significant functional impairment. The severity of the discomfort has reached a threshold that prevents him from engaging in age-appropriate play, causing him to become unusually withdrawn from routine family interactions. A comprehensive clinical examination has confirmed the diagnosis of Umbilical Hernia.

Masud was admitted with an umbilical hernia, presenting as a swelling at the umbilical region that increased with crying or straining. He was clinically stable on admission and later scheduled for surgical repair. The procedure was successfully performed without complications. Postoperatively, he was placed on antibiotics such as Amoxicillin and analgesics like Paracetamol, alongside close monitoring and wound care. He recovered well with good healing and gradual return to normal feeding and activity.

Masud’s clinical trajectory has shifted toward active surgical consideration. The persistent, localized discomfort he experiences is likely secondary to intermittent incarceration or traction of the omentum (peritoneal fat) or a small loop of bowel as it herniates through the narrow umbilical ring. The prognosis for an umbilical hernia in pediatric cases where the majority of defects resolve without surgical intervention. However, the outlook for adults or symptomatic children depends heavily on the timing of clinical management. Most cases have good prognosis.
