Alvin O., 3

Alvin is the last-born child in a family of six children. He lives with both of his parents and his five siblings in a small two-roomed mud-walled house. His mother is unemployed, and the family relies entirely on his father, who works as an unskilled laborer at construction sites whenever work is available. Despite their financial struggles, Alvin is described by his mother as a playful and cheerful child who enjoys going to school. Alvin had been well and active until his mother noticed something unusual. One day, he began complaining of persistent itching around his private parts. Initially, his mother thought it might be a minor irritation and tried to maintain good hygiene while observing his condition closely. Later that same day, Alvin went to pass urine but suddenly cried out in severe pain. His mother became increasingly concerned when she noticed that he was passing blood in his urine. Seeing her young child in such distress, unable to clearly explain his symptoms, caused great alarm. Without delay, Alvin’s mother rushed him to the hospital for urgent medical attention. Upon arrival at the facility, a healthcare worker attended to them and, after learning about their financial challenges, informed them about Helpster Charity. They were guided on how the program supports underprivileged children by covering medical expenses, and Alvin’s case was subsequently enrolled to ensure he receives the necessary treatment without financial burden.

Alvin was brought to the hospital with complaints of pain when passing urine, he was diagnosed with acute hematuria and UTI, he was admitted to the ward where he was given ceftriaxone, metronidazole, pcm among other antiand pain killers. He responded well to the medication having been able to retain them. He was eventually discharged on orals, with a call to his mother revealing he was back to playing like before.

For a 3-year-old with a urinary tract infection (UTI) and acute hematuria (blood in the urine), the prognosis is generally excellent, as the patient was brought to the hospital in time and medication started. However when left untreated bacteria may enter the blood stream causing sepsis and also affect the kidneys leading to acute kidney injuries.
