Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?
When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About emergency care
An umbilical hernia occurs when a portion of the intestine or fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles near the belly button. This condition often appears as a soft bulge or swelling that may become more prominent when coughing, straining, or crying. While many cases in infants resolve naturally as the muscles strengthen, adult cases typically require medical monitoring or surgical repair to prevent complications.

Background
Musa is a 12-year-old boy, the first of three children, who lives with his two sisters and their aunt in a two-room house in Tajuwa village. His father is a farmer who earns about 7,000 naira. Musa hopes to become a teacher when he grows up. He was brought to Ayaji Medical and Diagnostic Centre with a recurrent umbilical hernia. He had previously undergone primary suture repair of a large umbilical hernia on December 3, 2025, but later developed a bulge and discomfort at the previous incision site, especially during physical activity. On evaluation, the recurrence was confirmed on physical examination, and he required a secondary surgical repair with mesh to strengthen the abdominal wall.
Medical history
Musa, a 12-year-old boy, presented with a swelling around the umbilical region and was diagnosed with an umbilical hernia. Following clinical assessment and pre-operative evaluation, he was scheduled for hernia repair surgery. The procedure was successfully carried out under appropriate anesthesia without any complications. During his admission, Musa received intravenous fluids, antibiotics, analgesics for pain control, and other supportive medications as required. Post-operative monitoring showed stable vital signs and satisfactory wound healing. Musa responded well to treatment, with complete relief of symptoms and no signs of infection or recurrence. He was encouraged to gradually resume normal activities while avoiding heavy lifting during the recovery period. After making a full recovery and demonstrating good clinical progress, Musa was discharged home in stable condition. His family expressed sincere gratitude for the free medical care and life-changing support provided through Helpster Charity.
Prognosis
Musa primary suture repair of a large umbilical hernia on December 3, 2025at ayaji hospital, Musa presents with a clinical recurrence at the original site, likely due to the high tension placed on the abdominal wall without the support of a synthetic mesh. This recurrence is characterized by a visible protrusion and focal discomfort, which is now accompanied by acute symptoms of vomiting and localized pain. Such a presentation necessitates urgent clinical evaluation to rule out incarceration or strangulation, as the recurrence of a large defect is a documented risk factor in tension-based primary closures. The prognosis provided the defect is managed with the appropriate surgical technique and timely intervention.
