Shantel has malnutrition and malaria. Malaria is a potentially life-threatening infectious disease caused by parasites transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Once inside the human body, the parasites multiply in the liver and then infect red blood cells, causing recurrent cycles of symptoms, including high fever, chills, fatigue, and, in severe cases, organ damage or failure.This stage of the disease is defined by the evidence of vital organ dysfunction.

Shantel had been unwell for the past 10 days, complaining of a headache. Her mother had been giving her analgesics to relieve the pain, but over the past few days, Shantel's condition worsened, prompting her mother to bring her to the hospital. At the hospital, it was discovered that Shantel was also undernourished, which had weakened her immune system. She was diagnosed with malaria and treated with supplemental feeds and malaria medication. After receiving nutritional counseling, Shantel and her mother were discharged. A week later, Shantel was reviewed and it was confirmed that she was doing well.
Prognosis
Malaria should be treated promptly with the use of antimalarial drugs. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications and even death. It can result in organ failure, severe anemia, neurological issues, and in some cases, prove fatal, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial for preventing these life-threatening consequences.
