About infections
Severe malaria and enteritis is a coexisting condition involving systemic parasitic infection and gastrointestinal inflammation. Severe malaria, commonly caused by Plasmodium falciparum, presents with high fever, chills, anemia, jaundice, and possible organ dysfunction. Enteritis refers to inflammation of the intestines, often presenting with diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and dehydration. Patients may exhibit weakness, poor feeding, and electrolyte imbalance.

Background
Jovinah is an 11-month-old female, the third of three children, raised by her parents. Her father is currently unemployed, while her mother is a roadside trader. The family lives in a two-room apartment with a pit toilet, uses borehole water, and has no access to electricity. About an hour before presentation, she suddenly began vomiting everything she ingested after previously playing normally. She also developed a fever and started passing mucoid, watery stools. Her mother reported a two-day history of cough and runny nose. On examination, she appeared very ill and was febrile (38.1 °C), with fast breathing and a rapid heart rate. She was not jaundiced, cyanosed, or pale, and there was no organ enlargement. The family could not afford the medical bills and sought help through Helpster Charity. She was evaluated at the hospital and diagnosed with severe malaria and enteritis.
Medical history
Jovinah, 11 months old female baby was playing until an hour ago when she suddenly started vomiting everything ingested. The baby became very hot and she started passing mucoid with watery stool. She has been coughing with runny nose in the las two days. On examination, baby looked very ill and warm to touch (38.1o C), not jaundiced or cyanosed and not pale, however the breathing was fast and heart rate also fast. There were no organ enlargement and bowel sound present. She was diagnosed with Severe Malaria and Enteritis. She was administered medication which comprised of antimalarial injections, antibiotic injections and other supportive care. Patient did well, she became stable after care, temperature was back to normal, vomiting ceased and watery mucoid stopped. The family remained grateful for the support from Helpster Charity.
Prognosis
On examination, baby looked very ill and warm to touch (38.1o C), not jaundiced or cyanosed and not pale, however the breathing was fast and heart rate also fast. There were no organ enlargement and bowel sound present. She was diagnosed with severe malaria and enteritis. The combination worsens clinical status due to fluid loss and reduced immunity. Diagnosis involves blood film or rapid tests for malaria. Management includes prompt antimalarial therapy, rehydration, antibiotics for bacterial infection and supportive care to prevent complications.
