Severe malaria in a 5-year-old boy is a life-threatening condition caused by heavy infection with Plasmodium parasites, leading to very high fever, extreme weakness, vomiting, and sometimes impaired consciousness or seizures. The infection destroys red blood cells rapidly, which often results in severe anemia, which is a significant reduction in red blood cells. The child may appear unusually weak, less active, and may struggle with normal activities due to reduced oxygen delivery in the body. Severe malaria and anemia make the child critically ill, requiring urgent hospital treatment, including antimalarial drugs, supportive care, and in some cases, blood transfusion to restore adequate blood levels.

Background
Peter Ali is a 5 years old boy living with his grandmother and aunt in a modest family compound in Gataku Village of Nasarawa State. Peter Ali lost his father some years ago. His mother left her matrimonial home shortly after the demise of her husband. He has since been living with his grandmother and his aunt. He is a generally quiet boy who plays and is not in school. The grandmother of the child only engages in little farming and depends on her children for sustenance. The family survives on a limited income of less than 20,000 a month and is struggling to meet basic needs. Ali Peter felt symptoms of fever and general weakness accompanied with Anemia which initially appeared mild but became persistent and severe, including poor feeding and high body temperature. Initial home treatment with herbs and local primary health did not improve his condition, prompting his grandmother and Aunt to seek hospital care after the Helpster community outreach. Following evaluation, he was diagnosed with severe Malaria and severe Typhoid. He received treatment and has since discharged and is recovering well and looking better.
Medical history
The treatment of Ali Peter a 5-year-old boy with severe malaria and anemia began with urgent hospital care, including intravenous antimalarial medication to rapidly clear the parasites and supportive measures such as fluids, and close monitoring. A blood transfusion is given to restore adequate red blood cell levels and improve oxygen delivery. As the child stabilizes, treatment is gradually transitioned to oral medications, along with nutritional support to aid recovery. Upon showing vital signs of recovery, the child was discharged with oral medications such antimalarials, paracetamol, blood tonics, and antibiotics such cefuroxime for further recovery at home.
Prognosis
Severe Malaria and and Anemia in 5 year old is a serious medical emergency. Severe malaria can trigger life-threatening complications such as cerebral malaria, respiratory distress, and multi-organ failure. Severe anemia causes extreme tissue hypoxia and metabolic acidosis. With timely and adequate treatment, the prognosis is generally good. Delayed treatment or severe complications could worsen the prognosis, but in this case, with proper management, the likelihood of recovery is high.
