About severe malaria & pneumonia
Severe malaria and pneumonia is a life-threatening co-infection commonly seen in children in endemic regions. Severe malaria is a life-threatening form of the disease that occurs when the Plasmodium falciparum parasite causes organ failure or significant abnormalities in the blood or metabolism. Severe malaria, usually caused by Plasmodium falciparum, presents with high fever, chills, anemia, convulsions, and possible organ dysfunction. Pneumonia is an infection that causes the air sacs in one or both lungs to inflame and fill with fluid or pus. This buildup makes it difficult to breathe and often triggers symptoms like a deep cough, fever, chills, and chest pain. Pneumonia contributes respiratory symptoms such as cough, difficulty in breathing, fast breathing, chest indrawing, and hypoxia. The coexistence of both conditions worsens oxygen delivery due to lung involvement and reduced hemoglobin levels. Patients may appear very ill, febrile, weak, and in respiratory distress. Prompt diagnosis is essential.

Background
Lubabatu is a 5 month old female infant who is living with her parents in a small community in Bauchi, the parents have 3 other children. The father is a laborer and the mother is a house wife. They live in a 2 rooms apartment, they have a pit toilet, they make use of water from the borehole for their daily activities. They struggle to feed. They don't have access to electricity. Presenting complain: High grade fever, watery stool, cough, persistent crying. Lubabatu presented with complaints of fever which progressed to high grade, stooling was noticed to be watery 2 days ago, there was coughing and excessive crying. On examination, a 5-month-old baby infant, very ill looking, warm to touch with temperature 39.6 degrees Celsius, Tachypneic, unicteric, acyanosed, palor with intercostal and subcostal recission. She was diagnosed with severe Malaria and Pneumonia. The family cannot afford her medical bills, they solicited for medical support from Helpster Charity.
Medical history
Lubabatu is a 5-month-old baby infant, very ill looking, warm to touch with temperature 39.6 degrees Celsius, Tachypneic, unicteric, acyanosed, palor with intercostal and subcostal recission. She was diagnosed with severe Malaria and Pneumonia. Patient was admitted and was managed with antimalarial injection, injection antibiotics and other supportive until patient was stable. Fever stopped, feeding continued well and was discharged with some oral medications. Patient is to return for follow up after 1 week. The parents looked very exited as their daughter is healthy again, they appreciate Helpster Charity for the medical support.
Prognosis
Lubabatu presented with complaints of fever which progressed to high grade, stooling was noticed to be watery 2 days ago, there was coughing and excessive crying. On examination, a 5-month-old baby infant, very ill looking, warm to touch with temperature 39.6 degrees Celsius, Tachypneic, unicteric, acyanosed, palor with intercostal and subcostal recission. She was diagnosed with severe Malaria and Pneumonia. Management includes intravenous antimalarial therapy, broad-spectrum antibiotics, oxygen support, fluid management, and close monitoring to reduce morbidity and mortality.
