Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About infections

Schistosomiasis is caused by parasitic worms (Schistosoma species), commonly transmitted through contact with contaminated freshwater. In urinary schistosomiasis, the parasites primarily affect the bladder and urinary tract. Malaria is a serious disease spread by infected mosquitoes that causes high fever, chills, and flu-like exhaustion. If not treated quickly, it can progress to a life-threatening stage that damages vital organs like the brain and kidney. Chronic cystitis is a long-term inflammation of the bladder that causes persistent pelvic pain, frequent urges to urinate, and ongoing discomfort during urination.

Background

Hassan Ahmad is a seven-year-old boy as the only child his parents have. He lives with his parents in Amshi village, where the family occupies a small single-bedroom house, reflecting their modest living conditions. His father is a subsistence farmer, while his mother sells yam from home. Family income of about 7,000 naira, which they depend on for their daily needs. He attends school and has a strong ambition to become an engineer in the future. Hassan Ahmad, a 12-year-old male, was admitted to the hospital with complaints of painful urination (dysuria), blood in urine (haematuria), and dizziness. These symptoms had been present for several days before presentation. Prior to coming to the hospital, he had visited several patent medicine stores where he received treatment, but his condition did not improve. On examination, the patient was conscious and stable but appeared pale, suggesting possible anemia. Laboratory investigations revealed the presence of malaria parasites and other findings. Based on clinical features and test results, he was diagnosed with Malaria, Schistosomiasis complicated by Chronic cystitis.

Medical history

The 10-year-old child diagnosed with schistosomiasis was managed on an outpatient basis after clinical evaluation and laboratory confirmation. He was commenced on praziquantel as the definitive treatment for the parasitic infection. Supportive care was also provided, including analgesics for abdominal discomfort and adequate hydration. Health education was given to the caregiver on prevention measures such as avoiding contact with contaminated freshwater sources and maintaining proper sanitation. The child responded well to treatment with gradual resolution of symptoms, improved appetite, and overall clinical recovery. He was reviewed during follow-up and remained stable with no complications.

Prognosis

Hassan is diagnosed with Malaria, Schistosomiasis complicated by Chronic cystitis was made. The presence of hematuria, dysuria, and laboratory confirmation strongly supports involvement of the urinary tract by the parasitic infection. The patient’s prior use of medications from patent medicine stores without improvement suggests that the underlying condition was not adequately treated initially. Following appropriate medical intervention in the hospital, the patient responded well to treatment, indicating that the condition was correctly identified and effectively managed The prognosis of this condition depends largely on early diagnosis, adequacy of treatment, and prevention of reinfection. Prognosis is good/favorable Outcome if treated well.
