Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About severe malaria
Severe Malaria is a life-threatening complication of malaria, commonly caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It presents with high-grade fever, chills, repeated vomiting, profound weakness, pallor, jaundice, and altered consciousness. Patients may develop severe anemia, hypoglycemia, respiratory distress, convulsions, acute kidney injury, or cerebral malaria. It is more common in children, pregnant women, and non-immune individuals in endemic regions. Diagnosis is confirmed with malaria parasite testing.

Background
Elleora is a 2 months old female child. She is always seen happy around her siblings. She is living with her parents in a small community in Bauchi State. The father is not currently working while the mother is a house wife. Finding what to eat daily becomes a very serious problem for the family. They live in a 2 rooms apartment, having a pit latrine toilet, well in the compound and there is access to electricity. Eleora is a 2-month-old female child who started having high grade fever more in the evenings which has given her sleepless nights over the past 2 days with associated chills and rigors. She has rejected breastfeeding ever since. Examination showed acutely ill looking child, dehydrated, pale, icteric and febrile with temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius. She was evaluated when they brought her to the hospital due to financial constraints, diagnosis of severe malaria was made.
Medical history
Eleora is a 2-month-old female child who started having high grade fever more in the evenings which has given her sleepless nights over the past 2 days with associated chills and rigors. She has rejected breastfeeding ever since. Examination showed acutely ill looking child, dehydrated, pale, icteric and febrile with temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius. She was admitted and management was effective with injection antimalarials, injection antibiotics and other supportive care until patient was stable. She was discharged after 4 days of hospital stay as soon as patient became fully recovered. She was given some orals for continuation of home treatment. And was asked to come back for follow up after 1 week. The mother is happy and remained grateful to Helpster Charity for the support.
Prognosis
Eleora was diagnosed with severe malaria, and needed to be admitted for urgent treatment. Early diagnosis and prompt intravenous antimalarial therapy greatly improve survival and recovery. However, delayed treatment may lead to cerebral malaria, severe anemia, kidney failure, respiratory distress, or death. With adequate supportive care and close monitoring, Eleora will recover fully, though severe cases may have lasting neurological or organ complications. Immediate treatment was initiated and includes intravenous antimalarial therapy, fluid management, correction of anemia or hypoglycemia, and close monitoring. Prompt intervention significantly reduces mortality and improves recovery outcomes.
