Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About infections

Severe pneumonia is a serious infection of the lungs that interferes with normal breathing and oxygen exchange. It is characterized by symptoms such as high fever, persistent cough, fast breathing, chest indrawing, wheezing, and difficulty feeding in young children. The infection causes inflammation and fluid accumulation in the lungs, making it harder for the body to get enough oxygen. Severe pneumonia is considered a medical emergency, especially in infants and young children, and requires prompt hospital-based treatment with oxygen, antibiotics, and supportive care to prevent complications or death.

Background

Samuel is a one-year-old boy and the fourth-born in a family of four children. He lives with both parents in a single-room rented house and shares a pit latrine with neighbors. His mother runs a small business that supports the entire household, earning less than KSh 2,300 per month. The family relies on a community borehole for drinking water. Despite these modest conditions, Samuel is a playful child who enjoys interacting with his siblings in a warm family environment. Over the past three days, Samuel developed a high fever, marked body hotness, fast breathing, and wheezing—concerning signs of a serious and potentially life-threatening illness requiring urgent medical care. Due to financial constraints, his mother was initially unable to seek treatment. A neighbor, whose child had previously received care through Helpster Charity at Mechimeru Hospital, advised her to take Samuel there. He was assessed and diagnosed with severe pneumonia, necessitating immediate treatment and close monitoring.

Medical history

Treatment of severe pneumonia typically begins with immediate hospitalization, where Samuel would receive supplemental oxygen to stabilize breathing and, if necessary, support from mechanical ventilation. Doctors would administer broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics to target the underlying infection, later adjusting medication based on lab results. Additional care often includes fluids to prevent dehydration, medications to reduce fever and inflammation, and close monitoring of vital signs. If complications such as fluid buildup in the lungs occur, procedures may be performed to drain it. With timely and appropriate treatment, many patients gradually recover over days to weeks, regaining normal lung function, although severe cases may lead to prolonged recovery or complications such as lung damage or secondary infections.

Prognosis

Samuel’s presentation is consistent with severe pneumonia, evidenced by respiratory distress, fever, and reduced feeding. He has been admitted and commenced on appropriate treatment and close monitoring of vital signs. Early response to therapy will be a key indicator of recovery. Given his age and initial severity, careful observation is necessary to detect any deterioration. With timely and adequate management, most children improve significantly within a few days. Samuel’s outlook is cautiously optimistic, provided treatment is sustained and complications are avoided.
