About infections
Severe bronchopneumonia is a serious lower respiratory tract infection involving patchy inflammation of the bronchi and surrounding lung tissue. It commonly affects children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Patients present with high fever, persistent cough, difficulty in breathing, fast breathing, and chest indrawing. Other features include nasal flaring, grunting, and reduced oxygen saturation.

Background
Jacob is a 6 years old primary school boy, he is termed as 'one of the brightest' in school and amongst his peers. He stays with his parents. The father is a community security guard while the mother is a house wife. The family struggles to feed. They live in a 2 rooms apartment with 3 siblings having a pit toilet and they make use of water from the borehole for their daily activities. They don't have access to electricity. Jacob presented with history of persistent cough, high grade fever, chest pain and difficulty breathing of three weeks that has not responded to home remedies. He lives in a small room with poor ventilation. Examination shows an acutely ill looking child with difficulty breathing, SPO2 of 92 in room air, respiratory rate of 60cpm temperature of 39.7oC. Widespread crepitations noted in mid and lower lung fields bilaterally. He was thoroughly evaluated at Wholecare hospital and diagnosed with severe Bronchopneumonia. The mother cannot afford to pay the medical bills that is why they contacted Helpster Charity for the medical support.
Medical history
Jacob is a six years old male who presented with history of persistent cough, high grade fever, chest pain and difficulty breathing of three weeks that has not responded to home remedies. He lives in a small room with poor ventilation with three other siblings. No history of person with chronic cough though. No significant weight loss or drenching night sweat. Examination shows an acutely ill looking child with difficulty breathing, SPO2 of 92 in room air, respiratory rate of 60cpm temperature of 39.7oC. Widespread crepitations noted in mid and lower lung fields bilaterally. He was diagnosed with severe bronchopneumonia; he was on admission and management was with injection antibiotics, antipyretics and other supportive care, he was closely monitored until he recovered and was discharged. Some drugs were given for continued treatment at home. He is to return after 1 week for follow up. The family express their appreciation to Helpster Charity and the entire team for the medical support.
Prognosis

He was acutely ill looking child with difficulty breathing, SPO2 of 92 in room air, respiratory rate of 60cpm temperature of 39.7oC. Widespread crepitations noted in mid and lower lung fields bilaterally. He was diagnosed with severe Bronchopneumonia. urgently Admitted and managed with oxygen therapy, intravenous antibiotics, antipyretics, fluid management, and close monitoring. Complications include respiratory failure, sepsis, and pleural effusion. Prognosis is good with early and appropriate treatment.
