Stanley is the first and only child of a single mother. His mother separated from his father while still pregnant with him. They live together in a single-room mud-walled house, and his mother depends on small-scale peasant farming, with no stable source of income. Stanley’s mother had previously heard about Helpster Charity at the local market, where a volunteer was distributing flyers and educating community members about the program and how it supports underprivileged children in accessing medical care. According to his mother, Stanley had been well until the sudden onset of illness. He developed a high fever and became unusually irritable, crying persistently. Soon after, he began vomiting and developed multiple episodes of diarrhoea. As his condition progressed, he became increasingly weak. He stopped crying and instead could only groan, a change that greatly alarmed his mother. Recognizing the severity of his illness, she rushed him to a nearby health centre for urgent care. At the facility, his condition was assessed as serious, and he was promptly referred to a sub-county hospital for further management. Following evaluation and initial treatment at the sub-county hospital, the medical team determined that Stanley required more advanced care. He was then referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital for specialized management.

Stanley was brought to the hospital with complaints of fever, diarrhea and vomiting. He was diagnosed with severe malaria and severe anemia which warranted prompt admission. While in the ward he was transfused blood, administered IV Artesunate, ceftriaxone,folic acid , among other drugs. He responded well to medication and was eventually discharged on orals. A call to the mother reveals that Stanley is recovering well.

The prognosis for a 5-month-old baby diagnosed with severe malaria and severe anemia is serious and requires immediate, intensive medical care, but with prompt and appropriate treatment, many infants can achieve a full recovery. Stanley was brought to the hospital on time where prompt urgent medication was initiated before admission to the ward. He is set to make a full recovery.
