Typhoid fever is a life-threatening systemic infection caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi, typically spread through contaminated food or water and characterized by prolonged fever, fatigue, and abdominal pain.

Background
Abdullahi Umar, a 2-year-old boy, enjoys playing with toys, exploring his surroundings, and interacting with family. At his age, his dreams are simple, he loves learning new things, being active, and discovering the world around him. The family income is 15,000 Naira, they have no electricity with no proper latrine, and uses community borehole. Abdullahi Umar developed a cough, fever, and difficulty breathing three days ago. His illness started with fast breathing, chest discomfort, and lethargy. On examination, he showed signs of mild respiratory distress, low oxygen levels, and chest involvement. Diagnostic tests confirmed pneumonia with complications from typhoid fever. Currently, he is receiving antibiotics, oxygen therapy, and supportive care, with improvement expected before discharge.
Medical history
Abdullahi, a 2-year-old boy, was admitted on 29/03/2026 with a severe respiratory infection requiring inpatient care. He was managed with broad-spectrum antibiotics, oxygen therapy, antipyretics, intravenous fluids, nutritional support, and close medical observation throughout his admission. After three days in the hospital, Abdullahi was discharged on 01/04/2026 in stable condition. His breathing improved, his fever settled, and his energy gradually returned. Prognosis
Abdullahi Umar has pneumonia complicated by typhoid fever. He is experiencing cough, fever, difficulty breathing, chest discomfort, and mild hypoxia. His lungs show reduced air entry with crepitations, and tests indicate infection and inflammation, requiring antibiotics, oxygen, and supportive care. The doctor’s prognosis is that with proper treatment antibiotics, oxygen therapy, and supportive care Abdullahi is expected to recover fully. If left untreated, his pneumonia and typhoid fever could worsen, leading to severe respiratory distress, worsening infection, or potentially life-threatening complications.
