Rukayya I., 14

Rukayya Ismail is a 14-year-old girl who was previously healthy and actively engaged in her daily school life before the onset of her current illness. She is described as a calm, intelligent, and hopeful teenager who enjoys reading storybooks, helping her mother with household chores, and spending quiet time drawing and writing short stories. She dreams of becoming a medical doctor. Her father is a farmer who earns less than ₦20,000 per month. Rukayya developed sudden right-sided flank pain about 5 days before presentation. The pain was colicky in nature and radiated to her lower abdomen. It was followed by painful urination, increased urinary frequency, and episodes of blood in the urine. On examination, she was moderately ill but stable, with normal vital signs and right flank tenderness. Investigations: urinalysis showed blood in the urine without infection, and imaging (KUB X-ray) revealed a stone in the right renal pelvis. She was diagnosed with right-sided kidney stone disease. The plan is to proceed with surgery once financial approval and support are secured through the Helpster Charity Foundation.

Rukayya Ismail, a 14-year-old girl, was admitted on 21st April 2026 with a kidney stone causing blockage and bleeding, putting her at risk of serious kidney damage if left untreated. She was first stabilized with pain control, hydration, and close monitoring before undergoing a successful nephrolithotomy (surgical removal of the kidney stone). After surgery, she received pain management, infection prevention, and careful monitoring, with imaging to confirm complete stone removal. Over five days, her symptoms gradually resolved, her pain subsided, and her kidney function began to return to normal. By the time of her discharge on 26th April 2026, she was recovering well, able to move around comfortably, and expected to return to school and normal life with full recovery. Her family expressed heartfelt gratitude to Helpster Charity for sponsoring her treatment and giving her a future free from pain

Rukayya presented with pains urinating, blood in urine, and moderately unwell, she was diagnosed after investigations with Kidney Stone. A kidney stone in a 14-year-old can cause serious complications like urinary tract blockages, severe kidney infections, and permanent organ damage from backed-up urine. Thus what I assessed right away is whether or not the kidney is blocked, the cause of the stone and presence of infection. most teens tolerate treatment better because their kidneys are healthy and they recover faster. PROGNOSIS; with prompt treatment, prognosis is excellent, with surgery, this patients kidney function may likely resume 100%. However if left untreated, it can damage the kidney within days, early stone removal prevents long term damage.
