Background
Faith is the first-born in her family. After the death of her father in 2007, who had been the sole provider, the family faced significant hardship. She and her mother relocated to their ancestral home, where they depended on casual labor for survival. These challenges disrupted Faith’s education, as she often missed school to support her mother. Despite these difficulties, Faith remains resilient, hardworking, and active. She enjoys playing football with her friends during school games and holidays and dreams of becoming a nurse in the future. Faith was admitted to the hospital in active labour with a history of reduced fetal movements for 24 hours. Clinical assessment revealed a non-reassuring fetal status suggestive of fetal distress, as well as failure of labour to progress. Due to these findings, she was scheduled for an emergency caesarean section to safeguard the lives of both mother and baby.
Medical history
Faith had been in labour when healthcare providers identified signs of non-reassuring fetal status, suggesting that her baby was in distress, and they promptly recommended an emergency Caesarean section to ensure both their safety. The surgery was carried out successfully, and her baby was delivered in good condition, bringing great relief to Faith and the medical team. After the operation, Faith was closely monitored and given appropriate care to support her recovery, while her baby remained healthy, feeding well and showing normal progress. Over the following days, Faith steadily regained her strength, her wound healed well, and she was able to care for her newborn with confidence. She was eventually discharged home with her baby, both in good health, marking a positive outcome from what had initially been a concerning situation.
Prognosis
Faith presented with complications in labor, including non-reassuring fetal heart rate, indicating fetal distress. This required urgent cesarean section to prevent harm to both mother and baby. She was appropriately managed surgically and is currently stable, with close monitoring for post-operative recovery and infection. Her prognosis and that of the new born baby is expected to be good, after the caeserean section.
