About urology
Ureteric stones are hard mineral deposits that form in the ureter, the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder. They can block urine flow and cause severe, intermittent pain, often starting in the flank or lower back and sometimes radiating to the lower abdomen or groin. Patients may experience painful urination, reduced urine output, blood in the urine (hematuria), nausea, or vomiting. Untreated ureteric stones can lead to urinary tract infections, kidney swelling (hydronephrosis), or kidney damage. Surgical intervention or minimally invasive procedures are often required when stones are too large to pass naturally or cause severe symptoms.

Background
Yahaya is a lively and cheerful seven year old boy who loves playing with his friends and helping his parents around the house. He is curious, observant, and enjoys listening to stories from his elders. Yahaya parent very poor and their monthly income is approximately 22,000 naira only. He dreams of becoming a medical doctor one day so he can care for the sick in his community and make his family proud. He was presented with two weeks history of intermittent left flank colicky pain with difficulty passing urine. Symptoms subsided after taking pain reliever. The condition persisted and the parent decided to take him to traditional herbalist. The herbalist subjected him to various home remedies but symptoms persisted. Upon hearing about Helpster charity, they quickly brought the patient to UMD. YAHAYA was evaluated, and diagnosed with Ureteric stone. Planned for elective surgery upon approval by Helpster charity.
Medical history
Yahaya,is a 7 year-old boy, who was presented with a history of severe pain in his lower ftabdomen accompanied difficulty passing urine and occasional vomiting since 2 weeks. After thorough evaluation and investigation, he was diagnosed with Ureteric stone.He underwent successful surgery without immediate complications. Due to the nature of his condition, he was admitted for 3 days for close monitoring and post-operative care.He recovered well and was discharged home after 3 days, with a follow-up appointment scheduled for 1 week. Currently, he is doing well, has fully recovered, and has resumed his regular activities. We appreciate the timely intervention by Helpster and the UMD Medical team.
Prognosis
Yahaya's ureteric stone obstructed urine flow from the kidneys to the bladder, causing backflow, hydronephrosis, and kidney tension, leading to severe pain and potential kidney damage. Surgery is necessary to remove the stone, relieve symptoms, and prevent further kidney damage, with a good expected outcome. Ureteric stones can cause severe complications like permanent kidney damage due to chronic blockage, life-threatening blood infections (sepsis), and the total loss of renal function. Prompt medical surgery will significantly improve his health status and ensure better prognosis.
