Tonsillitis: Inflammation of the tonsils, usually due to infection, presenting with sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and swollen tonsils.

Background
Rose is a 10-year-old girl in Grade 4 living with her family in a rural area. They stay in a modest three-room mud-walled house with an iron sheet roof and no electricity, relying on water from a nearby stream. Her father, a boda boda rider, earns about KSh 2,500 per month to support the family. Rose is humble, hardworking, and enjoys playing outdoor games, helping with chores, and reading. She dreams of succeeding in school to improve her family’s future. She became unwell four days before presentation, with cough, chest pain, headache, difficulty swallowing, and fever. Despite receiving paracetamol at home, her condition worsened due to financial constraints limiting access to care. During a women’s meeting, her mother met a community health promoter who advised her to visit Bulondo Health Centre, where Helpster offers support. She was taken to the facility and enrolled. On examination, she had high fever (39.6°C) and signs of a chest infection, and is now receiving appropriate treatment.
Medical history
Rose, a 10-year-old girl, was admitted after being diagnosed with severe pneumonia and tonsillitis, conditions that caused difficulty in breathing, high fever, sore throat, and general weakness. She received prompt medical care that included antibiotics, oxygen support, fever management, and supportive nursing care to stabilize her breathing and improve her overall condition. Over the course of treatment, her symptoms gradually improved, her fever reduced, and her breathing became normal. She was later discharged in a stable condition, fully recovering her strength and appetite.
Prognosis
Rose presented with severe pneumonia and tonsillitis, evidenced by cough, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, high fever, and weakness. This was a serious condition requiring immediate admission and treatment. She was started on intravenous antibiotics, fluids, and supportive care, with close monitoring of her breathing and vital signs. Her prognosis is good with timely and appropriate treatment. Rose should begin to show improvement by Day 3 of treatment.
