Joseph is diagnosed with Pneumonia with Congestive Cardiac Failure. Pneumonia develops when the defensive mechanisms within the lung become overwhelmed by a pathogen which has been either inhaled or aspirated. It is associated with a high mortality rate and significant morbidity. Severe pneumonia is frequently a multisystem disease and patients will often present with multiple organ failure. Congestive Cardiac Failure is a condition where the heart is unable to pump blood effectively enough to meet the body's needs. The symptoms of Congestive Heart Failure can include the shortness of breath, especially during activity or when lying down, fatigue and weakness, swelling in the legs and other symptoms.

Background

Joseph is a 2 months old boy of a single mother, who is also a student. The mother is also a known sickled cell patient. The child was admitted at the Federal Medical Center Bida, with symptoms of fever, cough, and fast breathing. He was diagnosed with severe Pneumonia with Congestive Cardiac Failure.

Medical history

The child was placed on intranasal oxygen 1-2Ltr/min, I.V. Ceftriaxone and I.V. Furosemide. Lab. investigations too were run on the baby, FBC + Differencial and Blood Culture. Chest x-ray and Echocardiogram were done. The patient got better and was discharged home. But still attending follow up clinic.
