Sonam Akter has been diagnosed with intestinal tuberculosis (TB). This is a serious infection that affects the intestines, causing persistent abdominal pain, swelling, fever, and weakness, and it can interfere with digestion and nutrition. Over time, it may lead to weight loss and severe physical deterioration. If not treated properly, the infection can spread, cause intestinal obstruction or perforation, and become life-threatening. Therefore, timely and continuous medical treatment is essential for her survival and recovery.

Background
Sonam Akter, a 14-year-old girl, lives with her parents and younger sister in a cramped shelter in Geneva Bihari Camp, where her father’s income of 9,000 BDT as a factory guard is barely enough for daily survival, making medical treatment unaffordable. She is a bright and determined student who dreams of continuing her education, but her illness has left her in severe pain and unable to attend school or enjoy time with her sister. She developed persistent abdominal pain and fever, later diagnosed as intestinal tuberculosis after surgery. Her parents are deeply worried and trying their best, but financial hardship has left them helpless. They learned about Helpster Charity through a medical outreach camp, as without timely treatment, her condition may worsen, leading to severe infection, organ damage, and life-threatening complications.
Medical history
After receiving support from Helpster, Sonam Akter was admitted to Al-Manar Hospital on 19th April 2026, due to severe abdominal pain and other symptoms indicating intestinal tuberculosis. During her hospital stay, Sonam underwent surgery to address her condition, which was confirmed as intestinal tuberculosis through histopathology. She stayed in the hospital for a week, from 19th to 26th April 2026, receiving a combination of surgical care and anti-TB medication. The operation was successful, and she was discharged with instructions for continued medication. Although Sonam’s condition has improved, she still requires ongoing medical attention to fully recover. The family is deeply grateful for Helpster’s support, which allowed Sonam to receive this critical care.
Prognosis
With timely diagnostic laparoscopy, proper evaluation, and starting anti-TB medication, Sonam Akter’s condition can be effectively controlled. Treatment will reduce abdominal pain and swelling, control the infection, and help her regain strength. With regular follow-up and completion of the full course, she can return to normal life and continue her studies. However, if left untreated, the infection may spread, causing intestinal obstruction or perforation, severe weakness, and life-threatening complications. Timely treatment is essential for her survival.
