Acute appendicitis is an inflammatory condition of the appendix, usually resulting from obstruction of its lumen by fecal matter, lymphoid hyperplasia, or other causes. This obstruction leads to increased pressure, bacterial overgrowth, and inflammation, causing the characteristic progression of abdominal pain from the central abdomen to the right lower quadrant. If not treated promptly, the appendix may rupture, leading to peritonitis, abscess formation, and systemic infection, which can be life-threatening.

Background
Ibrahim Mohammed is a 13 year old boy whose father is a security guard, and his mother sells cooked food (Tuwo and soup) in the community. He comes from a family of 6 children, living on low and unstable income, making healthcare access difficult. Ibrahim is active and playful, but recently has become restless and unable to attend school due to pain. He dream of becoming a business man in the future. He presented with abdominal pain that initially started around the umbilical region and later localized to the right iliac fossa associated with nausea and vomiting since 2 days. Patient was taken to a local medicine store and obtained antibiotic with pain relief medication but symptoms persisted. Umar was brought to UMD where he was evaluated and diagnosed to have Acute appendicitis. He was prepared and operated as an Emergency case. He is fully recovered and he is doing well.
Medical history
Umar,a 13 year-old teenager, presented with a sudden onset of right lower abdominal pain, nausea, accompanied by vomiting, fever and he became very uncomfortable for the past 24 hours.After thorough evaluation and investigation, he was diagnosed with Acute appendicitis. He underwent successful Emergency appendectomy surgery without immediate complications. Due to the nature of his condition, he was admitted for 3 days for close monitoring and post-operative care.He recovered well and was discharged home after 3 days, with a follow-up appointment scheduled for 1 week. Currently, he is doing well, has fully recovered, and has resumed his regular activities. We appreciate the timely intervention by Helpster and the UMD Medical team.
Prognosis
The patient’s symptoms and examination findings are consistent with acute appendicitis diagnosis. Surgical removal of the appendix is recommended to prevent complications such as perforation, wide spread peritonitis, or abscess formation. Prognosis - With timely surgery, the prognosis is excellent, and full recovery is expected. Delay in treatment, however, may increase the risk of complications and prolonged recovery.
