Kaltum Yahaya is an 18-year-old young woman from a low-income household where her parents earn less than 25,000 naira monthly. She is responsible and helps with domestic work. She enjoys social interactions with peers. She dream of becoming a health care worker in the future. The family income is N22,000, they lack access to electricity and use community bore hole for their water. She said to have a longstanding pelvic inflammatory disease that hasn't been responding to treatment. She recently developed lower abdominal pain, fever, and abnormal vaginal discharge. Symptoms worsened over time due to untreated pelvic infection. The condition progressed to abscess formation. She sought Helpster Charity Foundation assistance for treatment. At UMD, she was evaluated and diagnosed with Tubo-ovarian abscess. She underwent a successful surgery where the abscess was drained. She has fully recovered and discharged home with follow up appointment.

Kaltum,a 17 year-old teenager, presented with lower abdominal pain, fever, accompanied by vaginal discharge,her symptoms worsen due untreated longstanding pelvic inflammatory disease and she eventually became very uncomfortable for the past 24 hours.After thorough evaluation and investigation, she was diagnosed with Tubo-ovarian abscess. She underwent successful Exploratory laparotomy surgery without immediate complications. Due to the nature of her condition, she was admitted for 3 days for close monitoring and post-operative care.She recovered well and was discharged home after 3 days, with a follow-up appointment scheduled for 1 week. Currently, she is doing well, has fully recovered, and has resumed her regular activities. Kaltum and her family are great ful and they appreciate the timely intervention by Helpster and the UMD Medical team.

She was diagnosed to have Tubo-ovarian abscess requiring antibiotics and possible surgical drainage. This is a life threatening condition that require immediate treatment. Complications of a Tubo-ovarian abscess include abscess rupture leading to life-threatening sepsis or peritonitis, as well as long-term issues like chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy. With timely intervention, patient is expected to have successful surgery and good prognosis.
