Severe malaria is a life-threatening form of malaria with high parasite levels, leading to complications such as severe anemia, impaired consciousness, or breathing difficulties, and requires urgent treatment. Severe pneumonia is a serious lung infection causing inflammation and fluid in the air sacs, leading to cough, high fever, chest in-drawing, difficulty breathing, and reduced oxygen levels.

Background
Dylan is a three-year-old boy, the second-born in a family of three. He lives with both parents and siblings in a one-bedroom mud-walled house without electricity. His mother is a housewife, while his father is the sole provider, relying on casual jobs to support the family. His mother reported that Dylan had been unwell for over three days, with persistent cough, vomiting, poor appetite, and intermittent fever. She initially hoped the symptoms would resolve on their own, but his condition worsened. On the day she decided to seek care, the father was away at work and unreachable, leaving her without transport money. When Dylan developed difficulty in breathing, she became alarmed and carried him on her back, walking for two hours to reach the health facility. Upon arrival, she explained her financial situation and was informed about Helpster Charity, which enabled Dylan to access the medical care he urgently needed.
Medical history
DYLAN WAS DIAGNOSED WITH SEVERE MALARIA AND PNEUMONIA, WAS MANAGED WITH ANTIMALARIALS, ANTIBIOTICS AND OTHER DRUGS AS PER MEDICAL REPORT. HE RESPONDED SO WELL TO CARE AND MANAGEMENT HE WAS GIVEN AND STABILIZED. HE WAS THEN DISCHARGED HOME ON ORAL MEDICATIONS TO CONTINUE AT HOME.
Prognosis
Dylan is critically ill with severe malaria and severe pneumonia, both of which can rapidly worsen, especially in young children. Immediate treatment with antimalarials, antibiotics, and supportive care is essential. With timely and appropriate management, he is expected to improve. Close monitoring is necessary to detect complications early. If he responds well to treatment, the prognosis is cautiously good, with a high chance of recovery.
