Background
Rafsan Munshi, a 4-day-old newborn, lives with his parents and two siblings in a fragile home in Puran Bazar, where his father earns only about 5,500 BDT per month as a rickshaw puller, making medical care unaffordable. He is a delicate and innocent baby whose weak movements and reduced feeding have deeply worried his family. Soon after birth, he developed increasing yellow discoloration and was diagnosed with neonatal jaundice requiring urgent care. His parents, along with his brother Rafi and sister Raisha, are anxious but helpless due to financial hardship. Without timely treatment, his condition may worsen, leading to severe complications like brain damage or even death, making urgent support essential.
Medical history
Rafsan Munshi, a 4-day-old newborn baby boy, was urgently admitted on 02.04.2026 with a diagnosis of neonatal jaundice, a condition that can become life-threatening if not treated promptly. His bilirubin levels were dangerously high, requiring immediate intervention through NICU care, oxygen support, and intensive phototherapy under the supervision of Dr. Md. Najmul Hasan, MBBS, MD (Pediatrics), BCS (Health), at Famous Specialized Hospital & Trauma Center, Chandpur. Throughout his hospitalization, Rafsan received continuous monitoring and specialized neonatal care to prevent complications such as infection and neurological damage. The treatment progressed steadily, with visible improvement in his condition as bilirubin levels began to decrease. After four days of dedicated care, Rafsan showed significant recovery, and his infection risk was successfully controlled. He was safely discharged on 05.04.2026 with his bilirubin levels returning to the normal range. This life-saving intervention was made possible through the generous support of Helpster Charity and Helpster Heroes, giving Rafsan a second chance at life.
Prognosis
With timely hospitalization, phototherapy, IV fluids, and supportive care, Rafsan Munshi’s jaundice can be effectively controlled and bilirubin levels will gradually decrease. Treatment will improve his feeding, activity, and overall strength, helping him recover safely. With proper monitoring and follow-up, he can grow and develop normally. However, if left untreated, bilirubin may rise to dangerous levels, causing brain damage (kernicterus), hearing loss, or developmental delay. These complications can be life-threatening, making timely treatment essential.
