About urology
Ureteropelvic junction obstruction, a condition where there is a narrowing or blockage at the junction between the kidney and the ureter, preventing normal drainage of urine from the kidney into the urinary tract. This leads to a gradual buildup of urine within the affected kidney, causing progressive swelling and persistent flank pain that tends to worsen over time. The continuous back pressure on the kidney tissue not only causes discomfort but also slowly damages the kidney’s filtering ability. If left untreated, the condition may progress silently to cause recurrent infections, significant kidney enlargement, and eventually permanent loss of kidney function on the affected side.

Background
Adamu is a 19-year-old young man from a low-income rural family. His father is engaged in small-scale transportation work while his mother runs a modest food-selling business. Adamu is calm, responsible, and well-behaved, often assisting his parents in small jobs. He aspires to become a medical professional in the future. According to Adamu his illness began gradually with a mild, intermittent pain on the left side of his back, which the family initially did not consider serious. Over time, the pain became more frequent and more intense, sometimes interfering with his normal activities and sleep. He also began experiencing episodes of nausea and general discomfort. Despite repeated use of over-the-counter medications, there was no lasting relief. As his condition continued to worsen and started affecting his daily functioning, the family eventually sought medical assistance through Helpster due to their inability to afford proper hospital care. He was evaluated and diagnosed with Ureteropelvic junction obstruction, a condition that require surgery (Open Pyeloplasty with stent). He was planned for elective surgery upon approval by Helpster charity foundation.
Medical history
Adamu,a 19-year-old male,presented with a history of Intermittent flank pain accompanied by nausea for two months.After thorough evaluation and investigation, he was diagnosed with Ureteropelvic junction obstruction. He underwent successful Pyeloplasty surgery without immediate complications. Due to the nature of his condition, he was admitted for 3 days for close monitoring and post-operative care. Adamu,has recovered well and was discharged home after 3 days, with a follow-up appointment scheduled for 1 week. Currently, he is doing well, has fully recovered, and has resumed his regular activities. We appreciate the timely intervention by Helpster and the UMD Medical team.
Prognosis
Adamu has a significant obstruction affecting the outflow of urine from the kidney, and the condition is already showing signs of progression which could lead to irreversible damage to the kidney,that may have lifelong consequences for such a young patient. Surgical repair is the best option to restore his kidney function at this moment and the outcome of the surgery will be favorable if treatment is initiated as soon as possible.
