Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About urology

Grade 3 hydronephrosis secondary to a kidney stone occurs when a blockage causes severe swelling and significant stretching of the kidney's internal collecting system. This advanced stage often results in thinning of the vital kidney tissue (renal parenchyma) and, if not treated quickly, can lead to permanent organ damage or total loss of kidney function.

Background

Musa Sunusi is a 19-year-old young man from a low-income household. His father works as a daily laborer with unstable income, while his mother is a petty trader struggling to support the family. They live in a crowded home with several dependents, making financial stability very difficult. Musa is quiet, hardworking, and tries to assist his family whenever possible. He dreams of becoming an artist in the future. Family income is 22,000 Naira, they have no electricity, uses community borehole and pit latrine. He was referred from a nearby health care facility by a health care worker who knew about Helpster charity foundation. His condition started with mild, occasional pain on the right side of the back, which was initially ignored as a minor illness and succumb to home remedies. Gradually, the pain became more frequent and severe, sometimes radiating to the lower abdomen and interfering with his daily activities. Associated episodes of discomfort during urination and sometimes become restless. Despite taking local medications, there was no improvement. As his symptoms continued to worsen and he became increasingly unable to carry out normal activities, the family eventually sought help through Helpster due to financial limitations and lack of access to specialized care. He was seen and evaluated and diagnosed with Right grade 3 hydronephrosis due to Kidney stone. He was planned for elective surgery upon approval by Helpster charity foundation.

Medical history

Musa,a 19 year-old male, was referred to our facility with a diagnosis of kidney stone. After thorough evaluation and investigation, he underwent elective nephrolithotomy. The surgery was successful without immediate complications. Due to the nature of his condition, he was admitted for 5 days for close monitoring and treatment.Musa, recovered well and was discharged home after 5 days, with follow-up care scheduled for 1 week. Currently, the patient is doing well, has recovered, and has resumed regular activities at home. We appreciate the timely intervention by Helpster and the UMD medical.

Prognosis

Musa has a large kidney stone that is completely blocking the flow of urine, causing his right kidney to swell significantly and stretch thin. This constant pressure triggers severe pain and prevents the kidney from filtering waste properly. Without urgent treatment to clear the blockage, the kidney may suffer permanent scarring or stop functioning entirely. This is a life threatening condition that require urgent surgical intervention to relieved the distention in his kidney and also to relieve his symptoms and avert irreversible kidney damages. At this stage he is expected to have successful surgery with favorable outcome if treatment isn't delayed. Prognosis is good if done early before Kidney injury starts.
