When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About infections
Malaria is an acute febrile illness caused by Plasmodium parasites, transmitted through mosquito bites. Symptoms include high fever, chills, sweating, headache, malaise, vomiting, and generalized body weakness requiring prompt treatment. Chest Infection is an infection affecting the lungs or airways, commonly presenting with cough, fever, chest pain, difficulty breathing, wheezing, and fatigue. Early diagnosis and appropriate antibiotics or supportive care improve recovery.

Background
Judith is a 2yo female child currently staying with her single mother and one sister. The husband abandoned the family because he can no longer provide for them. The mother has been finding it very difficult, she is staying in a rented apartment that the balance of the rent is yet to be settled due to lack, monthly income is 5,000, no access to electricity. They make use of borehole water. Judith is a 1-year-old female child who presented on the 17th of April, 2026 in our facility with complaints of tiredness, watery stool/blood stain, anorexia, fever, mild cough and oral rash. On examination, a 1-year-old female child, ill looking, wasted with sunken eyes, mild intercostal recession, irritable crying when spoken to. Febrile with temperature 37.6o C, anicteric, acyanosed, palor, tachypneic. She was diagnosed with Chest infection and acute malaria. They were evaluated and managed at the hospital.
Medical history
Judith is a 1-year-old female child who presented in our facility with complaints of tiredness, watery stool/blood stain, anorexia, fever, mild cough and oral rash. On examination, a 1-year-old female child, ill looking, wasted with sunken eyes, mild intercostal recession, irritable crying when spoken to. Febrile with temperature 37.6o C, unicteric, acyanosed, palor, tachypneic. She was diagnosed with Chest infection and acute malaria. Treatment was commenced with injection antimalarials, injection antibiotics, IV fluid, blood transfusion until she was stable and discharged. She is to be returned for follow up after 1 week. The mother is happy and remained grateful for the support from the entire team.
Prognosis
Judith was diagnosed with acute malaria and severe chest infection. She was a young child and came in very sick, requiring urgent medical treatment and admission to prevent severe complications such as acute respiratory failure, profound anemia, and septic shock as the lungs and blood cells are simultaneously attacked. Without immediate hospital intervention, this can rapidly progress to severe oxygen deprivation, metabolic acidosis, organ failure, or death. The prognosis of Malaria and Chest Infection is generally favorable with early diagnosis, adequate medications, hydration, and proper monitoring.
