Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?

When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About eyes

ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) is a potentially blinding eye disorder that affects premature infants, where abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina. If not detected and treated early, the worst consequences can include retinal detachment, leading to permanent vision loss or blindness.

Background

Sajid Hasan is a 1-month-old baby boy who lives with his parents and elderly grandparents in a small tin-made house in rural Chandpur. His father is the family's only earning member, working as a farmer on other people's land and earning around BDT 9,000 per month, which is barely enough to provide food and basic necessities, leaving no savings for emergency medical treatment. Despite his difficult start to life, Sajid is the center of his family's hopes and dreams, and his parents long to see him grow up healthy and attend school one day. After surviving serious complications at birth, he was diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in both eyes, a condition that threatens his vision and requires urgent treatment. Without timely anti-VEGF therapy and regular follow-up care, the disease may progress rapidly, causing permanent retinal damage and blindness, depriving him of the opportunity to see, learn, and live independently in the future. The family learned about Helpster Charity through Nasima Akhter, Counselor of the Pediatric Unit at Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital, and Helpster Volunteer Md. Al Amin.

Prognosis

According to Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain Sheikh and Dr. Md Saiful Islam, Sajid requires urgent Avastin injections in both eyes. The doctors emphasize that if treatment is administered within the appropriate timeframe, it can stop the abnormal blood vessel growth and significantly improve the chances of preserving vision. With proper care, Sajid may be able to develop functional eyesight and live a normal life. However, without treatment, the damage may become irreversible, leading to blindness and lifelong dependency. Immediate support is critical to ensure the best possible outcome for this child.
