Baby Cynthia is the first and only child of her mother. She lives with her mother, grandparents, and extended family in a two-room mud-walled house. Her mother is unemployed and depends on her parents, who are peasant farmers, to provide for the household. Her mother discovered she was pregnant after missing her menstrual period and experiencing persistent malaise. When she informed her partner, he withdrew support and became unreachable, leaving her to navigate the pregnancy alone. With the support of her family, she attended three antenatal care visits. During the pregnancy, she developed hypertension, presenting with swelling, severe headaches, epigastric pain, and visual disturbances, which required hospital admission for stabilization. A few weeks later, her mother developed twitching episodes and was rushed to a nearby facility before being referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital for specialized care. Baby Cynthia was delivered prematurely and admitted to the newborn unit for further management and close monitoring.

Baby Cynthia was born before the usual 37 weeks of gestation, and as a result, she was also of low birth weight. This warranted admission to the NBU (newborn unit), where she was placed in an incubator and fed and monitored. She stayed in the NBU for four weeks, upon which she gained weight , Having gained weight and being able to breastfeed, she was discharged home. A call by the volunteer to her parent revealed that she was growing well as expected; she was feeding as expected too.

Given her low birth weight and preterm status, Baby Cynthia prognosis is cautiously optimistic. Being monitored in the Newborn Unit (NBU) of a high-level facility like Siaya County Referral Hospital greatly improves her chances of survival and healthy development. With continued specialized care, proper feeding, infection prevention, and close monitoring, she has a strong chance of growth and recovery, though she remains at risk of complications associated with prematurity and low birth weight.
